“You are the writer, producer and director of your own mind programs….I should have done it years ago. It's amazing , I didn't even want cigarettes anymore“
Matt Damon, Actor
“Hypnosis is a natural and safe way to access the subconscious mind to facilitate healing and transformation.“
Bernie Siegel, Paediatric Surgeon
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a heightened state of concentration and focused attention. Guided by a certified clinical hypnotherapist, hypnosis allows you to be more open to suggestions to making healthful changes in your perceptions, sensations, emotions, physical body changes such as pain relief, thoughts or behaviours.
It is a type of Mind-Body medicine that makes people feel very calm and relaxed. Hypnosis allows the brain to bypass the conscious part of the mind and quieten it, thereby allowing the brain to gain hyperawareness, a state of being in control of one's body and/or its surroundings without consciously thinking about it.
Everyday people experience hypnosis , when absorbed in a book, watching television and even driving the car. It is a natural state of being. We use our subconscious mind to do these everyday tasks. We don't think about it, we automatically move our body in a certain way such as simply walking, becoming absorbed in beautiful music or a project naturally and automatically.
The subconscious mind holds all our memories, actions and learnings throughout life, even though consciously we might not remember. The memories are stored like a hard drive in a computer.
The hypnotherapist guides you through relaxed breathing and visualisation into the subconscious mind where beliefs, perceptions, emotions, memory and behaviours originate. In this state, you're more open to gentle guidance and suggestions to help you modify and replace the subconscious thoughts that are driving the current behaviour.
People seek out hypnotherapists for a variety of reasons. These include getting help overcoming fears and phobias, weight loss, negative and traumatising memories, insomnia and smoking. Hypnotherapy has been very successful in assisting labouring mothers by reducing pain in childbirth. More parents of children with ADHD are finding hypnotherapy has a positive and drug free effect on their children. According to Britain's Paediatrics Child Health, “Hypnotherapy allows the child to gain a sense of control, increased self esteem and competence, and reduce stress.”
“It can be used to help people overcoming addictions and negative habits by reprogramming the subconscious.“
David Kessler, Paediatrician.
Myths
Untrue. People remember everything that happens during hypnosis. You remain aware of who you are, where you are and remember everything that happened during the session.
Your hypnotherapist only guides hypnosis, but hypnosis is something you do for yourself. You can't be made to do anything against your will. You won't reveal any information you wish to remain secret. You don't lose control over your behaviour. Hypnosis makes it easier to experience and accept positive suggestions for you as an individual but it doesn't force you to accept them.
This is why the therapeutic relationship between the client and the hypnotherapist is so important. It is vital the client trusts and feels safe and relaxed with the therapist.
“Hypnosis is not a sleep-like state, but rather a wakeful one, where the patient is highly focused and suggestible. It is a highly effective tool for changing negative thought patterns and behaviour, facilitating positive change, reducing anxiety, depression and chronic pain.” - Michael Yapko, MD
The Session
Welcome introduction face to face, where the client is made to feel comfortable and has an explanation of the method of treatment.
A 30 minute free consultation where any questions can be asked and the nature of the treatment required according to the individual's need. A medical and psychological history form will need to be completed.
During this stage you begin to relax being guided by specific techniques such as controlled breathing, guided verbal progressive muscle relaxation using guided visualisation.
The relaxation continues on deepening the mind through various visualisations such as counting downwards or imagining descending stairs or escalators. Walking down hills. Each visualisation is created to be unique and individual for the client depending on their specific needs.
This is where very carefully chosen words and phrases are suggested, and is the stage where actual change in perceptions, behaviours happen. Occasionally if a client has deep rooted unresolved issues from the past, where possible, regression and analysis will happen to unblock those fixed ideas in the mind. Normally it is more straightforward, where the subconscious mind is accepting easily the new positive, healthy behaviours ensuring a happy, productive and satisfying life.
To stop smoking, you'll learn to identify your personal triggers that make you want to smoke, learn positive ways to change, understand how to change with the resources available to effect change, disrupt your pattern, attach a better alternative to the cigarette, notice the difference and install the changed behaviour. You may be asked to see your “old self” with black lungs in the mirror behind you and see your “new healthy self” with clean lungs in front of you. You will then be guided to choose which self you like and walk towards it.
The average person experiences Hypnosis at least twice a day, as have human beings for all time as it is a natural state of being.
Imhotep, the world's first physician in ancient Egypt used healing sanctuaries called sleep temples, where hypnotic suggestions just as in modern hypnotherapy were give to those in need both mentally and physically. During the 1st World war, Hypnosis was used by the early pioneers of medicine to help heal the traumatic physical wounds and shell shock. These amazing doctors learned quickly how to help with pain relief through suggestion and hypnosis as they did not have enough medicine and basic needs to look after the wounded soldiers.
Lesley Irvine
Hello,
My name is Lesley and I'm pleased to me you . I love my job with a passion and hope to lead you with great anticipation towards experiencing and expecting the great rewards and benefits of physical and psychological health that hypnotherapy will bring to you.
I have been practising medical, clinical and analytical hypnotherapy for over 20 years. It is the most fascinating and rewarding job where I see astounding results in all areas.
I was very fortunate to be taught by the renowned Dr John Butler, who for 40 years has worked training innumerable medical doctors, dentists, psychiatrists, psychologists and lay people, having made groundbreaking steps in educating the medical profession in Clinical Hypnotherapy. He is renowned for his work at The Royal College of Anaesthetists and can be seen on a channel 4 documentary having a hernia operation using hypnosis only for Anaesthesia. I gained my qualifications from John at his training school “Hypnotherapy Training International“ and earlier at “The National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy“ Later I also trained under John Butler's mentor, Gil Boyne, in his cutting edge development in Transforming Therapy, where regression and gestalt therapy is used to remove trauma and fixed ideas from the subconscious. Gil Boyne, sadly demised, was the pioneer of modern clinical and analytical hypnotherapy, having worked with Milton Erickson, Fritz Pearls, Dr Dave Elman and Dr James Braid. The eminent psychiatrists and medical doctors interested in, experimenting with and practising hypnosis during and after World War II, healing psychological trauma and war wounds.
Aside from my hypnotherapy practice , I am also a yoga and meditation teacher. This merges beautifully with hypnotherapy as the yogic pranayama breath work and certain physical yoga poses can work alongside and assist within the framework of hypnosis . I understand how the body works in conjunction with the mind.
Both meditation and hypnosis are achieved using the same part of the mind, the subconscious. Both states are reached through slow deep breathing and relaxation, giving a wonderful sense of peace, yet achieving hyper awareness and mental focus. In meditation the purpose is to clear the mind of all thought, whereas in Hypnosis the therapist gives clear and precise suggestions to imprint on the subconscious mind to heal and change the unwanted behaviour.
I feel confident and happy to hold a strong yet safe space when working with clients. Many of the issues that clients come to me with are those I have myself worked through personally using self hypnosis and meditation daily. My 3rd child was born using hypnosis . I have had several operations where I used hypnosis, pre and post operatively. I recovered very quickly and easily and my baby daughter was a peaceful dream. Various personal family issues and traumas I have experienced, I did suffer from, yet learned over time how to mend myself and move forward with this wonderful therapy. This is why I advocate with a full heart, the miraculous benefits of learning how to understand how the mind works. Using the skillful knowledge of hypnosis where one can permanently and positively change one's life for good.
Dr Emile Coue, an eminent 19th century French psychiatrist said, “Every thought or idea occupying the mind causes a physical reaction “ So true!
I have worked for 10 years with grief and loss. I worked for Hospice Home Support in Surrey as a bereavement councellor for end of life patients and their families. I also have worked as a Red Cross first aid trainer, so although not medically trained, I have vast knowledge of dealing with medical and psychological emergencies.
My personal belief and philosophy of ensuring the body's physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual selves are completely in balance and harmony, has been proven a hundred fold to create a happy, healthy, successful, inspired yet peaceful individual.
I look forward to leading you towards your personal goal and well-being, so your life is fulfilled, happy and healthy.
